Dear Parents and Guardians,
November is a busy month in second grade. We have been enjoying lots of patriotic books in preparation for Veteran's Day. On November 11th, Illini Bluffs School District will be having a program to honor our Veterans that will include music, guest speakers, and involvement from students in all 3 IB schools. The Veteran's Day program will be at 10:00 in the High School Gym. There will also be a Veteran's Day Luncheon for Veteran's and family members following the ceremony. Because of our annual Veteran's Day in the Commons, your child will need to bring a sack lunch to eat in our classroom.
In Math, we have started bar modeling and teaching number bonds which is a new concept for second graders. Bar models are used to illustrate the adding on, taking away, part-part-whole comparison concepts related to computation in addition and subtraction. Students are able to draw number bonds and bar models to help them determine whether they need to add or subtract to find the answer to a real-world problem.
We have been reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction books. We have been analyzing the author's purpose for writing these stories. Second grade students are getting really good about picking out the main idea and details of a reading selection. Students are also doing an excellent job of summarizing what they have read. Thank you for continuing to read with your child the weekly selection story and for signing the reading slips.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Sager
